Great Ormond Street Hospital was the first dedicated children’s hospital in the UK, opening its doors on 14 February 1852. Over the following 170 years, the hospital has continually grown and developed to meet increasing demand for its services. GOSH is a tertiary and quaternary hospital, specialising in complex treatments for rare conditions. Flagship services include cancer, cardiac, respiratory and neurosciences. Together with our research partner, the UCL Institute of Child Health (ICH), we form the UK’s only academic biomedical research centre specialising in paediatrics.
GOSH has been developing new facilities almost continuously throughout its history and recent developments include the multi-award-winning Zayed Centre for Rare Diseases in Childhood. This landmark building brings together researchers and clinicians in collaborative workspaces and laboratories to advance the treatment and management of rare diseases. In 2021, GOSH opened the first dedicated facility for the care of children with hearing and sight impairment, the GOSH Sight & Sound Centre Supported by Premier Inn.
The Children’s Cancer Centre, Phase 4A of GOSH’s redevelopment masterplan, is in the final stages of RIBA Stage 4 design development and will enter Stage 5 in early 2023. Our planning application for this new building was approved in spring 2023. This crucial phase of GOSH’s redevelopment will deliver a new main entrance and face of the hospital, transforming the arrival experience for children and families.
